Internet in Vietnam without roaming: a guide

Internet in Vietnam: roaming, a Vietnamese SIM or an eSIM?

With Polish operators Vietnam belongs to the distant, expensive roaming zone. A Vietnamese SIM has to be registered against your passport with a photo, and a card that is not registered stops working after a few days. An eSIM bought in Poland gets round both obstacles: you install it at home, and in Hanoi or Saigon you step off the plane with data.

What to know about Vietnam in particular

  • Grab there is a taxi, a scooter with a driver and food delivery in one, with the price set up front. Without data you are left haggling in the street.
  • Zalo is the Vietnamese messaging app that hotels, guides and drivers write on. It is worth having alongside WhatsApp.
  • Touring from north to south. Between Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Da Lat and Saigon coverage is good in the cities and on the main roads, weaker in the mountains around Sa Pa and on the water in Ha Long Bay.
  • A camera translator saves the day with menus and timetables; that is data too.

Questions about the internet in Vietnam

Is registration with a passport needed?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. The registration requirement applies to Vietnamese SIM cards.

Does the package work in Ha Long Bay and in Sa Pa?

In the towns and harbours, yes. On the water and in the mountains the network is sometimes weak; download maps and tickets beforehand.

Does a layover in Doha or Bangkok use up the package?

No. The package works only on Vietnamese networks and starts at the first connection to one of them.
