Internet in the USA without roaming: a guide

Internet in the USA: roaming, an American SIM or an eSIM?

With Polish operators the United States are among the most expensive roaming zones, and the distances in the USA mean that a phone with navigation is needed there more than anywhere. On the first day an American prepaid SIM has to be found, activated and put in instead of your Polish one; an eSIM bought in Poland works from the moment you land.

What to know about the USA in particular

  • Uber and Lyft from the airport and around town; taxis hailed in the street are rarer and dearer. You order in an app, so data has to work already in the arrivals hall.
  • A hire car and navigation. Between Los Angeles and Las Vegas or across Florida the map on your phone is essential; navigation eats data, so allow plenty to spare.
  • National parks and the wilderness. In the Grand Canyon, Yosemite or on Route 66 there is often no coverage with any operator. Download the maps offline.
  • Tickets and boarding passes for museums, parks and domestic flights you keep on your phone.

Questions about the internet in the USA

Does the package for the USA work in Canada or Mexico?

No. For a trip across the border choose the regional "USA and Canada" package or a separate package for Mexico.

Will it work in Hawaii and Alaska?

Yes, they are US states. Coverage in Hawaii is good along the coast; in Alaska outside the towns there is sometimes none.

Does a phone from Poland work on American networks?

Newer phones do. Very old models may not support the LTE bands used in the USA; check that your phone supports LTE on bands 2, 4, 12 or 66.
