Internet in Japan without roaming: a guide

Internet in Japan: roaming, a Japanese SIM or an eSIM?

Japan lies in Polish operators' most distant roaming zone, and it is a country where it is hard to take a step without your phone: train timetables, shinkansen tickets, a menu translator, the Tokyo metro map. Japanese tourist SIMs are sold at the airports against a passport, usually with a time limit and without a number; an eSIM bought in Poland works from the moment you land at Narita or Haneda.

What to know about Japan in particular

  • A camera translator is your basic tool: menus, ticket machines, signs. Download Google Translate offline, but it translates better online.
  • Trains. You check timetables and tickets in apps; you book and activate a Japan Rail Pass online.
  • Payments. Suica and PASMO work in your phone; topping them up needs data.
  • Coverage is excellent in the cities and good in the mountains and the countryside; in the metro too. A layover in Doha or Helsinki does not use up the package.

Questions about the internet in Japan

Does the package for Japan work in South Korea?

No. For both countries choose the regional "Japan and South Korea" package.

Does the eSIM work on the shinkansen and in the metro?

Yes, coverage on trains and in the metro in Japan is good; in mountain tunnels it drops out briefly.

Do I have to register with my passport?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Registration applies to Japanese SIM cards bought locally.
