Internet in Turkey without roaming: a guide
Internet in Turkey: roaming, a Turkish SIM or an eSIM?
Turkey is not in the European Union, so the EU's "roam like at home" stops at the border. In Turkey a Polish SIM charges for data at the rates for countries outside the EU, and with most operators those are dozens of times higher than at home. You have three options, and they differ mainly in how much hassle they take.
| Option | What you have to do | Polish number | Cost of data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roaming package from your Polish operator | Turn the package on in the operator's app | Stays | The most expensive per gigabyte |
| Turkish SIM card (Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom) | A queue in the shop, registration with your passport, swapping the card in your phone | Gone from the phone for the trip | Cheap, but it costs time and a registration |
| siEmanko! eSIM bought before you fly | Five minutes at home over Wi-Fi | Stays, you get the texts from your bank | The package price up front, no surprises |
What to know about Turkey in particular
- Buy and install the eSIM before you fly. Since July 2025 the Turkish regulator BTK has been blocking, inside the country, the websites and apps of some foreign eSIM providers. The technology itself works normally, but buying and installing at Antalya airport may not work. A profile installed in Poland connects to the Turkish network without a hitch.
- Phone registration does not apply to you. Turkey requires phones brought from abroad to be registered only after 120 days' stay. For a holiday, even a four-week one, it makes no difference.
- Networks. The package connects to the networks listed with it above. On the Turkish Riviera, in Istanbul, Cappadocia and Bodrum coverage is good; it weakens in the Taurus Mountains and in remote areas.
- A layover does not use up the package. Nor does a flight via Istanbul on the way somewhere else: the package starts at the first connection to a Turkish network, so turn the eSIM line off if Turkey is only a stopover.
How much data for a trip to Turkey
| Trip | How much to take | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| A week all inclusive | 1–3 GB | Maps, WhatsApp, photos to the family, booking excursions |
| Two weeks touring | 5–10 GB | Navigation in the car, Instagram, Google Translate with the camera |
| Remote work, a month | 20 GB or more | Video calls, files, films in the evening |
Hotel Wi-Fi in Turkey is often free only in the lobby, or slows down in the evening when everyone connects. Your own data comes in handy on the beach, on the trip to Pamukkale and in a taxi.
Before you fly
- 1.Dial *#06# on your phone's keypad: if you see an EID line, the phone supports eSIM. It must not be locked to an operator.
- 2.Choose a package for Turkey and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- 3.Install the eSIM at home, over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone. Until you leave, keep data on your Polish SIM.
- 4.After landing, switch mobile data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it. On your Polish SIM leave data roaming off.
Questions about the internet in Turkey
Will my Polish SIM work in Turkey without a package?
It will, but you will pay for data according to your operator's price list for countries outside the EU. The safest thing is to turn data roaming off on it while still on the plane and use the eSIM.
Can I buy an eSIM once I am in Turkey?
Better not. Because of the BTK blocks, some eSIM providers' websites do not open on Turkish networks, so buying after landing may not work. Buy and install in Poland; the package will only start in Turkey anyway.
Does WhatsApp work in Turkey?
Yes, WhatsApp messages and calls work normally. Your number stays on the Polish SIM, so WhatsApp needs no change.
