Internet in Thailand: roaming, a Thai SIM or an eSIM?

With Polish operators Thailand is among the most expensive roaming zones, so there you use your Polish SIM only for texts from your bank. After a flight of a dozen or more hours to Bangkok, the last thing you want is a queue for a SIM card. A Thai tourist SIM requires a passport and face verification at the stand; an eSIM bought in Poland starts working as the plane touches the runway.

What to know about Thailand in particular

  • Grab and Bolt instead of haggling with a taxi: in Bangkok, on Phuket and in Chiang Mai you order a ride in an app with the price known up front. No data, no app.
  • LINE is Thailand's number one messaging app: hotels, guides and tour companies write to you on it. Install it before you fly.
  • The islands. On Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Koh Lanta coverage is good by the beaches and in the towns, and weakens inland and on the ferries. You book ferries and stays from your phone.
  • A layover in Doha, Dubai or Istanbul does not use up the package, because it works only on Thai networks.

Before you fly

  1. 1.
    Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
    Choose a package for Thailand and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
    Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
    After landing, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it. The package will start at the first connection to a Thai network.

Questions about the internet in Thailand

Will the package for Thailand work in Cambodia or Laos?

No, it works only on Thai networks. For a tour of several countries choose a regional package for Asia.

Does the eSIM work on the islands?

Yes, wherever a Thai operator's network reaches. By the beaches and in the towns it is good; in the jungle and at sea there is sometimes a gap.

Do I have to register with my passport?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Registration with a passport and a photo applies to Thai SIM cards bought locally.
