Internet in the United Kingdom after Brexit: roaming or an eSIM?

Since Brexit the United Kingdom has not been part of the European Union, and the EU's "roam like at home" does not cover it. Polish operators treat it differently: some still include it in their EU packages as a promotion, some charge for it as a country outside the EU. Before you go to London or to family in Manchester, check in your tariff how much a gigabyte costs there. If you do not like the answer, a 30-day eSIM usually works out much cheaper.

What to know about the United Kingdom in particular

  • When an eSIM makes the most sense: visiting family, seasonal work, studies and any stay longer than a week, when your operator's package runs out or there is none.
  • The package works in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is in the Union, so there your Polish SIM works as it does at home, and the British package does not.
  • By ferry and through the Channel Tunnel the package starts at the first connection to a British network, just as it does after landing.
  • The London Underground has coverage on more and more sections, but it is still better to have the city map offline.

Before you go

    Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
    Choose a package for the United Kingdom and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
    Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
    Once there, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.

Questions about the internet in the United Kingdom

Does my Polish operator still give free roaming in the UK?

It depends on the operator and the tariff; some do, as a promotion, some do not. Check in your operator's app before you decide.

Does the package work in Northern Ireland and in Dublin?

In Northern Ireland, yes, because that is the United Kingdom. In Dublin, no, because the Republic of Ireland is the Union, where your Polish SIM works as it does at home.

Can I buy an eSIM for longer than a month?

Choose a package with a longer validity if there is one on the list, or buy another when the first runs out.
