Internet in Dubai and the Emirates: roaming, a tourist SIM or an eSIM?

The United Arab Emirates lie outside the European Union, so a Polish SIM charges for data there at the rates for countries outside the EU. Dubai is a city where you need your phone all the time: for a Careem taxi, for a ticket to the Burj Khalifa, for the map in a shopping centre the size of a district.

What to know about the Emirates in particular

  • WhatsApp calls are blocked. On the Emirati operators' networks, voice and video calls over WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger do not work. Messages, photos and voice notes get through normally. For calls people there use Botim or Zoom; install them while still in Poland.
  • The package works across the whole of the Emirates: in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. On a desert safari coverage is weaker, but it comes back at the camps.
  • A layover in Dubai on the way to Asia does not use up the package, unless you turn data on on the eSIM. If the Emirates are only a stopover, leave the line off.
  • Heat and battery. In summer a phone in the sun overheats quickly and cuts its data connection; a power bank is more useful here than anywhere.

Before you fly

  1. 1.
    Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
    Choose a package for the United Arab Emirates and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
    Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
    After landing, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.

Questions about the internet in the Emirates

Can I call Poland over WhatsApp from Dubai?

Not over WhatsApp, because calls on it are blocked in the Emirates. Over Botim or Zoom, yes, and the eSIM's data package is all you need for that.

Does one package work in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Yes. The package for the Emirates covers all seven emirates.

Do I need data if the hotels have Wi-Fi?

In the hotel and the shopping centre, no. In a taxi, on the beach, on safari and on the road between cities, yes, and that is where you spend most of the day.
