Internet in Tunisia without roaming: a guide

Internet in Tunisia: roaming, a Tunisian SIM or an eSIM?

Tunisia lies outside the European Union, so a Polish SIM charges for data there at the rates for countries outside the EU. Most Poles go to Tunisia for a week all inclusive in Sousse, Hammamet or on Djerba, and the hotel Wi-Fi there most often works only in the lobby. An excursion to the Sahara or to Carthage is a whole day on a coach without data, unless you have your own.

What to know about Tunisia in particular

  • On excursions to the Sahara, to Kairouan, Carthage and Djerba you travel for hours; the map, photos for the family and contact with your tour rep need data on the coach, not in the hotel.
  • The medina and the souk. In the narrow alleys of Sousse and Tunis the map on your phone gets you back to the hotel without a guide.
  • Coverage is good on the coast and in the towns, weaker inland and in the desert.
  • WhatsApp calls work normally.

Questions about the internet in Tunisia

Does the eSIM work on Djerba?

Yes, the package covers the whole of Tunisia, Djerba and the coast included.

Will there be coverage on an excursion to the Sahara?

In the towns along the route, yes; on the dunes, with gaps. You will send the maps and photos from the next stop.

Do I have to register with my passport?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Registration applies to Tunisian SIM cards bought locally.
