Internet in Switzerland without roaming: a guide

Internet in Switzerland: roaming or an eSIM?

Switzerland belongs neither to the European Union nor to the European Economic Area, so the EU's "roam like at home" does not cover it. Polish operators usually charge for it as a country outside the EU, with high rates for data. Even a few days in Zurich, skiing in Zermatt or a drive across the Alps on the way to Italy can cost more in roaming than a whole eSIM package.

What to know about Switzerland in particular

  • The border catches you early. By Lake Constance, near Geneva and on the Alpine passes your phone connects to a Swiss network while still on the German, French, Austrian or Italian side, and your Polish SIM then charges for data at Swiss rates. As you approach the border, turn data roaming off on your Polish SIM and switch to the eSIM.
  • Liechtenstein belongs to the European Economic Area, so there your Polish SIM works as it does at home.
  • Trains and mountains. SBB timetables, tickets and the weather forecast in the app; in tunnels and high in the mountains coverage drops out, and it comes back in the valleys.
  • Skiing. On the slopes coverage is good by the lifts and mountain huts, weaker on runs away from the resort.

Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
Choose a package for Switzerland and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
Once you are in Switzerland, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.

Questions about the internet in Switzerland

I am driving through Switzerland to Italy. Is an eSIM worth it?

For a one-day drive through, usually yes, because roaming on a Polish SIM in Switzerland is expensive and the phone picks up a Swiss network even before the border. A small package is enough.

Does the package for Switzerland work in Italy and Austria?

No, but you do not need it there: that is the Union, where your Polish SIM works as it does at home.

Will there be coverage in the Alps?

By the lifts, in the resorts and in the valleys, yes. On remote trails and in tunnels, with gaps.
