Internet in Sri Lanka without roaming: a guide

Internet in Sri Lanka: roaming, a Sri Lankan SIM or an eSIM?

Sri Lanka lies in Polish operators' distant, expensive roaming zone. You can buy a Dialog or Mobitel tourist SIM at Colombo airport with your passport, but after a night flight there is a queue, and then swapping the card in your phone. An eSIM bought in Poland works from the moment you land: a tuk-tuk from an app, the map to the hotel, a message to the family.

What to know about Sri Lanka in particular

  • PickMe and Uber order a tuk-tuk and a taxi with the price known up front; in Colombo, Kandy and Galle they are essential.
  • Trains. The famous Kandy–Ella line: you check the timetables and tickets on your phone, and send photos from the window.
  • Coverage is good on the coast and in the towns, drops out in the tea hills, and is sometimes absent in the national parks.
  • The monsoon. The south-west has rain from May to September, the east from October to January; you keep checking the forecast.

Questions about the internet in Sri Lanka

Does the eSIM work in the tea hills?

In Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella, yes; on the trails between them, with gaps.

Does a layover in Dubai or Doha use up the package?

No. The package works only on Sri Lankan networks.

Do I have to register with my passport?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Registration applies to SIM cards bought locally.
