Internet in Cape Verde: roaming, a local SIM or an eSIM?

The Republic of Cape Verde lies outside the European Union, off the coast of Africa, and with Polish operators it belongs to an expensive roaming zone. Poles fly there by charter to Sal and Boa Vista, to all-inclusive hotels where the Wi-Fi works in the lobby and slows down in the evening. You can buy a local CVMóvel or Unitel T+ SIM in town, but it is quite a way from a hotel in the dunes to town.

What to know about Cape Verde in particular

  • The islands. The package works on every island the network reaches: Sal, Boa Vista, Santiago, São Vicente, Santo Antão. Between the islands you fly or sail; on the ferry there is no coverage.
  • Excursions. On Boa Vista a jeep over the dunes and a beach with turtles, on Sal Pedra Lume and Buracona: the coach runs without Wi-Fi, and you want to send the photos straight away.
  • Coverage is good in the towns and resorts, weaker inland and in the mountains of Santo Antão.
  • Time. Two hours behind Poland in winter, three in summer; plan video calls home for the evening.

Does one package work on Sal and Boa Vista?

Yes, the package covers the whole country.

Does a layover in Lisbon use up the package?

No. In Portugal your Polish SIM works as it does at home, and the package only starts on the network on the islands.

Won't the hotel Wi-Fi be enough?

In the lobby, usually yes; on the beach, in the dunes and on excursions, no.
