Internet in Mexico without roaming: a guide

Internet in Mexico: roaming, a Mexican SIM or an eSIM?

With Polish operators Mexico belongs to the distant, expensive roaming zone. Most Poles fly to Cancún and the Riviera Maya, and from there go on excursions to Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Cozumel, where the hotel Wi-Fi does not reach. You can buy a Mexican Telcel SIM in an OXXO shop for next to nothing, but you have to find it, activate it and put it in instead of your Polish one.

What to know about Mexico in particular

  • Uber and DiDi work in Cancún, Mexico City and the bigger cities; on the Riviera Maya taxi drivers can be hostile to them, so order discreetly.
  • Flying via the USA. A layover in New York or Dallas does not use up the package for Mexico; for a trip through both countries choose the regional "North America" package.
  • Coverage is good in the resorts, the cities and along the main roads; in the Yucatán jungle and in the cenotes it drops out. On excursions with a tour operator the coach often runs without a network.
  • Weather and hurricanes. From June to November you follow the warnings and flight changes on your phone.

Before you fly

    Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
    Choose a package for Mexico and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
    Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
    After landing, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.

Questions about the internet in Mexico

Does the package for Mexico work in the USA during a layover?

No, it works only on Mexican networks. For both countries choose a regional package.

Does the eSIM work on Cozumel and Isla Mujeres?

Yes, wherever a Mexican operator's network reaches; on the islands it is good by the beaches and in the towns.

Is registration needed?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Mexico does not require tourists' phones to be registered.
