Internet in Morocco without roaming: a guide

Internet in Morocco: roaming, a Moroccan SIM or an eSIM?

Morocco lies outside the European Union, so a Polish SIM charges for data there at the rates for countries outside the EU. From Poland you fly to Marrakech and Agadir with low-cost airlines, and once there your phone works non-stop: the map in the medina, a taxi from an app, a menu translator. You can buy a Moroccan SIM at the airport with your passport, but after a night flight that is one more queue.

What to know about Morocco in particular

  • The medina. In Marrakech and Fez the alleys have no names, and navigation on your phone is the only way to get back to your riad without a "helper" who then wants paying.
  • Taxis. Careem and inDrive work in the bigger cities with the price known up front; without data you are left haggling.
  • Coverage. Good in the cities, on the coast and on the main roads; in the Atlas Mountains and in the desert near Merzouga it drops out. Download the maps offline.
  • Calls through apps work normally.

Questions about the internet in Morocco

Does the package work in the Sahara?

In the towns along the route, yes; on the dunes, with gaps. That is the desert, not the package.

Does WhatsApp work in Morocco?

Yes, messages and calls work normally.

Do I have to register with my passport?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Registration applies to Moroccan SIM cards bought locally.
