Internet in the Maldives without roaming: a guide

Internet in the Maldives: roaming, a local SIM or an eSIM?

The Maldives lie in Polish operators' most distant roaming zone, and hotel Wi-Fi on a resort island is sometimes paid for or works only at reception and in the restaurant. You can buy a local Dhiraagu or Ooredoo SIM at Malé airport with your passport before you board the boat or seaplane; an eSIM bought in Poland works from the moment you land and all the way to the island.

What to know about the Maldives in particular

  • Resorts and local islands. On a resort island there is usually a network, because the operators put masts there; on local islands such as Maafushi or Thulusdhoo too. On the boat between atolls there is sometimes a gap.
  • Photos and video from the water use up data faster than you think; sending films to the family is gigabytes.
  • A layover in Doha, Dubai or Istanbul does not use up the package; it works only on Maldivian networks.
  • Time. Three hours ahead of Poland in summer; plan calls home for the afternoon.

Before you fly

    Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
    Choose a package for the Maldives and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

    Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
    After landing, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.

Questions about the internet in the Maldives

Will there be coverage on a resort island?

On most, yes, because the operators put masts there. Ask the resort before you go if it matters to you.

Does the package work on the boat and the seaplane?

Near the islands, yes; on open water between the atolls, with gaps.

Do I have to register with my passport?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Registration applies to SIM cards bought at Malé airport.
