Internet in Georgia without roaming: a guide

Internet in Georgia: roaming, a Georgian SIM or an eSIM?

Georgia is not in the European Union, so a Polish SIM charges for data there at the rates for countries outside the EU. From Poland you fly to Kutaisi and Tbilisi with low-cost airlines, often in the middle of the night, and then data straight after landing means more than it does by day: a Bolt taxi instead of haggling with a driver in the car park.

What to know about Georgia in particular

  • Bolt works in Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi with the price known up front; at night from the airport it is the biggest difference data makes.
  • The Georgian alphabet you will not be able to read, but your phone's camera will translate a sign, a menu and the marshrutka timetable.
  • The mountains. On the way to Kazbegi, to Svaneti or Tusheti coverage drops out for longer stretches. Download the route maps and the forecast before you head into the valleys.
  • Wine and feasts keep you longer than you plan; a 30-day package gives you room to spare.

Questions about the internet in Georgia

Does the package work in Kazbegi and Svaneti?

In the villages and towns, yes; in the valleys and on the trails, with gaps. That is the mountains, not the package.

Will the eSIM work at Kutaisi airport at night?

Yes. The package starts at the first connection to a Georgian network, at any hour, with no stand and no queue.

Does the package for Georgia cover Armenia?

No. For a tour of the Caucasus choose a regional package or separate packages.
