Internet in the Dominican Republic without roaming: a guide

Internet in the Dominican Republic: roaming, a local SIM or an eSIM?

The Dominican Republic lies in Polish operators' distant, expensive roaming zone. Most Poles spend a week or two all inclusive in Punta Cana there, and the hotel Wi-Fi in the big resorts works in the lobby and slows down in the evening. You can buy a local Claro or Altice SIM with your passport in a shop, but you have to get to the shop.

What to know about the Dominican Republic in particular

  • Excursions. To Saona, to Santo Domingo and to Isla Catalina you travel for hours by coach or boat; you will send the photos and the map from your phone, not from the hotel.
  • Coverage is good in the resorts and cities, weaker in the Cordillera Central mountains and on remote beaches; at sea there is none.
  • Uber works in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana; in the resorts the hotel taxis have fixed prices.
  • Hurricanes. From August to October you follow the warnings and flight changes on your phone.

Questions about the internet in the Dominican Republic

Won't the hotel Wi-Fi be enough?

In the lobby, usually yes; on the beach and on excursions, no. Your own data comes in handy wherever you want to send a photo.

Does the package work on Saona?

By the beaches and in the village, yes; on the boat, no.

Does a layover in Madrid or Paris use up the package?

No. There your Polish SIM works as it does at home, and the package only starts on a Dominican network.
