Internet in Albania without roaming: a guide

Internet in Albania: roaming, an Albanian SIM or an eSIM?

Albania is not a member of the European Union, so the EU's "roam like at home" ends at the Greek border — and if you come through Montenegro, it ended back at the Croatian one. Polish operators charge for it as a country outside the EU. The Albanian Riviera, Ksamil, Berat and Tirana are an ever more frequent destination for Poles, often by car, and then navigation on mountain roads needs data from the very first kilometre.

What to know about Albania in particular

  • By car across the Balkans. If your route runs through Serbia, Montenegro and Albania, the regional "Balkans" package is more convenient than three packages.
  • Roads. Navigation in the mountains and on the hairpin bends above Ksamil is essential; download the maps offline too, because coverage drops out in the valleys.
  • Payments. Cash still dominates outside Tirana; you will find a cash machine with the map on your phone.
  • Coverage is good on the coast and in the towns, weaker in the Albanian Alps and the Valbona valley.

Choose a package for Albania and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
Once you have crossed the border, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.

Questions about the internet in Albania

Does EU roaming work in Albania?

No. Albania is outside the Union and your Polish operator charges for it separately. Check your tariff or use the eSIM.

I am driving through Montenegro and Albania. One package?

Yes, the regional one for the Balkans. The package for Albania works only in Albania.

Do I have to register with my passport?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Registration applies to Albanian SIM cards bought locally.
