Internet in South Korea without roaming: a guide

Internet in South Korea: roaming, a Korean SIM or an eSIM?

For Polish operators South Korea is a distant, expensive roaming zone, and there your phone guides you all day: the metro map, the menu translator, a taxi from an app. A Korean SIM is sold at Incheon airport, but it needs your passport and replaces your card; an eSIM bought in Poland works from touchdown.

What to know about South Korea in particular

  • Google Maps does not navigate on foot or by car. As of autumn 2026 it shows only places and public transport in Korea. Get Naver Map, the tourists' favourite, in English, or KakaoMap.
  • Taxis from an app. Koreans use Kakao T; tourists have it easier with k.ride, its version for foreigners, which needs no Kakao account and takes foreign cards.
  • Networks. The packages use the LG Uplus and SK Telecom networks. Traffic exits through Singapore, so sites and apps may see you as being in Singapore, not Korea.
  • Entry without a K-ETA. Poles are exempt from the K-ETA until 31 December 2026; if you fly in 2027, check whether the exemption was extended.

How much data for a trip to South Korea

TripHow much to takeWhat it covers
A week in Seoul3–5 GBNaver Map, translator, k.ride, photos
Two weeks: Seoul, Busan, Jeju10 GBNavigation, Instagram, bookings

Seoul has nearly 10,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots, but maps and taxis need data on the way between them.

Before you fly

  1. 1.
Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
Choose a package for South Korea and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone. Download Naver Map and k.ride too.
  4. 4.
After landing at Incheon, switch data to the eSIM and turn on its data roaming. The package starts on the first Korean network it connects to.

Questions about the internet in South Korea

Does Google Maps work in Korea?

Partly: it shows places and public transport, but no walking or driving navigation. On foot, Naver Map is better.

Does the eSIM work in the Seoul metro?

Yes. Mobile networks reach metro stations and tunnels, so maps and messages work underground too.

Does the Korea package work in Japan?

No, only on Korean networks. For both countries choose the regional "Japan and South Korea" package.
