Internet in Singapore without roaming: a guide

Internet in Singapore: roaming, a Singaporean SIM or an eSIM?

Singapore is outside the EU, so a Polish SIM charges non-EU rates for data there. For many Poles it is a few days' break on the way to Bali, Australia or further around Asia, and in the city you need your phone all the time.

What to know about Singapore in particular

  • Submit the SG Arrival Card before you land. You fill it in for free within three days before arrival, on the ICA website or in the MyICA app. Transit passengers who stay airside don't need it.
  • On a layover the package can wait. At Changi Airport, including the transit area, there is free #WiFi@Changi with no registration. The package starts at the first connection to a Singaporean network, so turn the eSIM line on only when heading into the city.
  • Wireless@SG is free Wi-Fi at MRT stations and in shopping malls. The login code arrives by text on your Polish SIM.
  • Grab, Gojek or TADA instead of hailing a taxi: you book the ride in the app and see the price before you book.
  • Networks and the metro. The packages connect to the M1, Singtel and StarHub networks. The regulator IMDA requires 4G coverage in over 99% of metro tunnels. Traffic may exit via Hong Kong, so websites sometimes think you are there.

  1. 1.
Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
Choose a package for Singapore and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
Once you leave the airport, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.

Questions about the internet in Singapore

Does a layover in Singapore use up the package?

Not if you don't turn the eSIM line on. In the transit area the free #WiFi@Changi is enough, and the package only starts on a Singaporean network.

Does the Singapore package work in Malaysia or Thailand?

No, only on Singaporean networks. For a trip through Malaysia to Thailand choose the regional package for Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

Is free Wi-Fi enough in Singapore?

At the airport, in malls and at metro stations it often is. On the street and on the move it isn't, and that is where you book a ride and check the map.
