Internet in the Philippines without roaming: a guide

Internet in the Philippines: roaming, a Philippine SIM or an eSIM?

The Philippines is in Polish operators' distant, expensive roaming zone. A tourist's Philippine SIM needs a passport, an accommodation address and a return ticket, and works for only 30 days. You install an eSIM bought in Poland at home and land in Manila or Cebu with data.

What to know about the Philippines in particular

  • eTravel before arrival. Every traveller registers in the free eTravel system, at most 72 hours before arrival. Do it in Poland; save the QR code on your phone or print it.
  • SIM registration. The SIM Registration Act requires every Philippine SIM to be registered; a tourist SIM switches off after 30 days. An eSIM bought in Poland roams, so registration does not apply.
  • Networks and islands. Packages connect to Globe and Smart. Smart has LTE in every Palawan municipality, El Nido and Coron included, and Globe has expanded on Boracay. On a boat while island hopping the signal can weaken or vanish. Traffic exits via Singapore, so some websites will think you are there.
  • Typhoon season. From June to November typhoons bring down power lines, and the regulator NTC says power cuts are what most often knock out mobile networks. Take a power bank and offline maps.

Questions about the internet in the Philippines

Do I have to register with my passport?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Registration applies to Philippine SIM cards.

Will I have data while island hopping?

Near towns and ports usually yes, on open water with gaps. Download maps and tickets beforehand.

Does a layover in Doha or Dubai use up the package?

No. It works only on Philippine networks and starts when it first connects to one.
