Internet in Malaysia without roaming: a guide
Internet in Malaysia: roaming, a Malaysian SIM or an eSIM?
Malaysia is outside the European Union, so a Polish SIM charges for data there at the rates for countries outside the EU. You can buy a Malaysian SIM at Kuala Lumpur airport, but after a long flight a registration awaits you. An eSIM is installed at home, and you walk off the plane with data.
| Option | What you have to do | Polish number | Cost of data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roaming package from your Polish operator | Turn it on in the operator's app | Stays | The most expensive per gigabyte |
| Malaysian SIM (CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile) | A shop at the airport, original passport, biometric verification, swapping the card | Gone from the phone | Cheap, but with formalities |
| siEmanko! eSIM bought before you fly | Five minutes at home over Wi-Fi | Stays | The package price up front |
What to know about Malaysia in particular
- The MDAC arrival card. You fill it in online, free of charge, within three days before arrival, on the Malaysian immigration department's website. Avoid sites that ask you to pay for it.
- A Malaysian SIM works for three months at most. Since 26 February 2026 a tourist registers a SIM in person, with an original passport and the address where they are staying. An eSIM bought in Poland works in roaming and does not go through this registration.
- Grab instead of a taxi. In Kuala Lumpur, on Penang and Langkawi, and in Kota Kinabalu you book a ride in the app, with the price known before you go.
- Coverage and Borneo. The packages connect to the CelcomDigi, Maxis and Tune Talk networks all over Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak included. In the interior of Borneo masts are still being built, so download offline maps. Traffic may exit via Singapore, so websites sometimes decide you are there.
How much data for a trip to Malaysia
| Trip | How much to take | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| A week in Kuala Lumpur or on Langkawi | 3 GB | Grab, maps, WhatsApp, photos |
| Two or three weeks with Penang and Borneo | 5–10 GB | Instagram, booking flights, a translator |
| A month or remote work | 20 GB or more | Video calls, files, films |
A layover in Doha, Dubai or Singapore does not use up the package, because it works only on Malaysian networks.
Before you fly
- 1.Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
- 2.Choose a package for Malaysia and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- 3.Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
- 4.Within three days before arrival, fill in the MDAC.
- 5.After landing, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.
Questions about the internet in Malaysia
Does the Malaysia package work in Singapore or Thailand?
No, only on Malaysian networks. For a trip through several countries, choose the regional package for Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
Will the eSIM work on Borneo?
Yes, the package covers Sabah and Sarawak too. In Kota Kinabalu and Kuching it is good; in the jungle and on the rivers there can be gaps.
Do I need a Malaysian SIM for Grab?
No. You can open a Grab account with your Polish number, which will receive the text with the code; best do it while still in Poland.
