Internet in Kenya without roaming: a guide

Internet in Kenya: roaming, a local SIM or an eSIM?

Kenya is outside the European Union, in a distant, expensive roaming zone for Polish operators. You can buy a Kenyan SIM in an operator's shop, but only with your original passport. An eSIM bought in Poland works from the moment you land in Mombasa or Nairobi.

What to know about Kenya in particular

  • A Kenyan SIM has to be registered. Since 2025 the operator must see your original passport and check the details against government databases. An eSIM bought in Poland works in roaming, so the registration does not apply to it.
  • Network. The packages connect to the Safaricom network, Kenya's largest operator. In Mombasa and Diani the network is dense. In the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo there is usually signal at the park gates and the lodges, while deeper inside the parks it weakens or disappears, so download maps offline.
  • Wi-Fi in safari camps is common, often by satellite, but usually only at reception or in the dining area, and at night it is sometimes switched off.
  • Traffic via Israel. Data from the package goes out to the internet through Israel, so some websites may show up in Hebrew; you can change the language in their settings.
  • Telegram in November. In 2023–2025, during the KCSE school exams, Kenya restricted Telegram, mainly on the Safaricom network.

How much data for a trip to Kenya

TripHow much to takeWhat it covers
A week on the beach in Diani or Watamu3 GBWhatsApp, maps, photos to the family
Safari and beach, two weeks5–10 GBPhotos and videos of the animals, Instagram, bookings
A month or remote work20 GB or moreVideo calls, files, films

Safari videos for the family run to gigabytes. If the camp has working Wi-Fi, send large files over it.

Before you fly

  1. 1.
Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
Choose a package for Kenya and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
After landing, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it. The package starts at the first connection to a Kenyan network.

Questions about the internet in Kenya

Will I have internet on safari in the Masai Mara?

At the reserve gates and in the camps, usually yes. On a game drive deep in the reserve the signal weakens or disappears.

Do I have to register with my passport?

Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. Registration applies to Kenyan SIMs bought locally.

Can I pay with M-Pesa using the eSIM?

No. An M-Pesa account is opened on a Kenyan SIM, and the siEmanko! eSIM gives you data, not a Kenyan number.
