Internet in Jordan without roaming: a guide

Internet in Jordan: roaming, a Jordanian SIM or an eSIM?

Jordan is outside the European Union, so "roam like at home" does not work there, and a Polish SIM charges for data according to the price list for countries outside the EU. Poles most often fly to Aqaba on a winter charter and go from there on day trips to Petra and Wadi Rum; others start in Amman and drive around the country all the way to the Dead Sea.

What to know about Jordan in particular

  • The Zain network. The packages connect to the Zain network, one of Jordan's three operators alongside Orange and Umniah. In cities and at tourist sites the network is reliable. Before you head deep into the Wadi Rum desert, download offline maps.
  • Traffic exits through Europe. Data from the package reaches the internet through Europe, so some websites will show you their European version rather than the Jordanian one.
  • Near the border, choose the network by hand. Aqaba lies right next to Israel, not far from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and across the Dead Sea are Israel and the West Bank, so your phone can pick up a stronger signal from across the border. Jordan's regulator, the TRC, advises selecting a Jordanian network manually in such places or turning data roaming off. On the eSIM, choose Zain.
  • Print your Jordan Pass. The issuer of the Jordan Pass, the visa and entry to Petra in one, advises showing it printed out, because the QR code on a phone screen can be unreadable.

How much data for a trip to Jordan

TripHow much to takeWhat it covers
A week in Aqaba with excursions1–3 GBMaps, WhatsApp, photos to the family, keeping in touch with the guide
A road trip: Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea5–10 GBNavigation in the car, Instagram, Google Translate with the camera
Remote work, a month20 GB or moreVideo calls, files, films in the evening

A day in Petra or in the desert means many hours away from the hotel Wi-Fi, and you want to send the photos straight away, not in the evening.

Before you fly

  1. 1.
Dial *#06# on your phone's keypad: if you see an EID line, the phone supports eSIM. It must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
Choose a package for Jordan and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
Install the eSIM at home, over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
After landing in Aqaba or Amman, switch mobile data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it. On your Polish SIM leave data roaming off.

Questions about the internet in Jordan

Will the package work in Petra and Wadi Rum?

Yes, the package covers all of Jordan and works wherever the Zain network reaches. In the desert coverage is not guaranteed, so keep your maps and tickets saved on the phone.

Why does my phone show a foreign network in Aqaba?

Because near the border the signal from a neighbouring country can be stronger. Choose Zain manually in the network settings, and keep data roaming off on your Polish SIM.

Do I need my passport for the eSIM?

No. Registration with a passport applies to a Jordanian SIM bought locally. An eSIM bought in Poland works in roaming, and you install it at home.
