Internet in India without roaming: a guide
Internet in India: roaming, an Indian SIM or an eSIM?
India lies far outside the European Union, so a Polish SIM charges for data there according to the expensive price list for countries outside the EU. A foreigner can buy an Indian SIM, but it is a procedure: a passport with a visa, an address of stay and verification in the shop. An eSIM bought in Poland works from the moment you land in Delhi, Mumbai or Goa.
| Option | What you have to do | Polish number | Cost of data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roaming package from your Polish operator | Turn it on in the operator's app | Stays | Very expensive |
| Indian SIM card (Airtel, Jio, Vi, BSNL) | A shop, a passport with a visa, a local address or contact, swapping the card | Gone from the phone | Cheap, but with formalities |
| siEmanko! eSIM bought before you fly | Five minutes at home over Wi-Fi | Stays | The package price up front |
What to know about India in particular
- An Indian SIM is paperwork on your passport. A foreigner gets one on a passport with a valid visa, and gives a local contact, for example a travel agency, or the hotel as the address. A tourist's SIM works at most until the visa ends. An eSIM bought in Poland works in roaming and needs none of this.
- UPI payments. In India people pay with their phones by scanning a QR code. A tourist can open a UPI One World wallet on a passport and visa, without an Indian bank account; authorised companies issue it at airports, hotels and currency exchanges. To pay you need data on your phone.
- Networks. The packages connect to the Airtel network, and the traffic goes out to the internet through Singapore, so some websites will show you their version for Singapore. Airtel has coverage in every district of Rajasthan and Kerala. In the Himalayas the network has gaps: only in November 2025 did Airtel close a 50-kilometre hole on the road to Pangong Lake in Ladakh.
- Do not bring a satellite phone. According to India's embassies, bringing Thuraya and Iridium phones into the country is banned. The devices are detained and the owner faces a penalty.
How much data for a trip to India
| Trip | How much to take | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Two weeks in Goa | 3–5 GB | Maps, WhatsApp, QR-code payments, photos |
| A tour of Rajasthan or the Golden Triangle | 5–10 GB | Navigation, train and hotel bookings, Instagram, a translator |
| A month or remote work | 20 GB or more | Video calls, files, films |
Before heading into the Himalayas, download offline maps and save your tickets on the phone, because coverage cuts out on the passes. In the cities your own data comes in handy in a taxi booked through an app, at the station and with every QR-code payment.
Before you fly
- 1.Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
- 2.Choose a package for India and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- 3.Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
- 4.After landing, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it. The package starts at the first connection to an Indian network.
Questions about the internet in India
Do I have to register with my passport?
Not with an eSIM bought in Poland. A passport, a visa and a local address are needed for an Indian SIM bought on the spot.
Will the India package work in Nepal or Sri Lanka?
No, it works only on the Indian network. For a tour of several countries choose a regional package for Asia.
Does a layover in Dubai or Doha use up the package?
No. The package only starts at the first connection to an Indian network.
