Internet in Canada without roaming: a guide

Internet in Canada: roaming, a Canadian SIM or an eSIM?

Canada is outside the European Union, so a Polish SIM charges for data there according to the price list for countries outside the EU, one of the most expensive with Polish operators. Canadian prepaid SIMs are sold with 30-day plans, even if you are flying in to see family in Toronto or Calgary for a week.

What to know about Canada in particular

  • An eTA before you fly. Poles do not need a visa, but to fly to Canada, including a connection at a Canadian airport, they need an electronic travel authorization (eTA). You apply online on the Government of Canada's website; approval usually comes within minutes. Driving in from the USA, you do not need an eTA.
  • Coverage ends sooner than the country does. In the cities and the densely populated south the network is good. According to the CRTC, about 13% of major roads have no coverage; gaps occur even on the Trans-Canada Highway, most often in remote areas and in the north.
  • The Rockies. Parks Canada warns that there is no coverage on the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper. Download maps and tickets before you leave town.
  • Networks. The package connects to the Bell, Rogers, SaskTel and Telus networks and works only in Canada.

Distances in Canada are huge, so navigation in the car runs all day.

  3. 3.
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.

After landing, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.

Questions about the internet in Canada

Will a Canada package work in the USA?

No, it works only on Canadian networks. For a trip to the American side of Niagara or to Seattle, choose the regional "USA and Canada" package.

Will I have internet on the road from Banff to Jasper?

At both ends of the Icefields Parkway, in Lake Louise and in Jasper, yes. On the road itself there is no coverage, so download the map beforehand.

Will my Polish SIM work in Canada without a package?

It will, but you will pay for data according to the price list for countries outside the EU. Turn data roaming off on it while still on the plane.
