Internet in Brazil without roaming: a guide

Internet in Brazil: roaming, a Brazilian SIM or an eSIM?

With Polish operators Brazil belongs to the distant, expensive roaming zone, so there a Polish SIM is useful mainly for texts from your bank. A tourist without a CPF number activates a Brazilian SIM in the operator's shop, with a passport.

What to know about Brazil in particular

  • A phone in your hand attracts thieves. In Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo phone snatching, including from motorbikes, happens regularly, so check the map inside a shop, not at the kerb. An eSIM cannot be taken out and put into another phone; your Polish SIM can, so keep your operator's number handy to block it quickly.
  • WhatsApp for everything. Almost 9 in 10 Brazilians message businesses on WhatsApp, so your guesthouse or guide will most likely reply there. Your number stays Polish, you change nothing.
  • Anatel's blocks do not affect you. The regulator cuts counterfeits and phones with a fake IMEI off the networks. A tourist may use a phone of a known brand bought in Poland in Brazil without registering it.
  • Networks. The packages connect to the Claro, TIM and Vivo networks, and traffic exits in Brazil. In the big cities coverage is good; the gaps are mainly in rural and remote areas.

How much data for a trip to Brazil

TripHow much to takeWhat it covers
A week in Rio3 GBMaps, WhatsApp, rides, photos
Two or three weeks: Rio, Iguaçu, the northeast10 GBNavigation, Instagram, bookings
A month or remote work20 GB or moreVideo calls, files, films

Public Wi-Fi can be taken over by criminals, so do not log in to your bank over it; your own data replaces it.

Before you fly

  1. 1.
Dial *#06#: an EID line means the phone supports eSIM. Note down the IMEI too, in case of theft. The phone must not be locked to an operator.
  2. 2.
Choose a package for Brazil and pay with BLIK, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  3. 3.
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: instructions for your phone.
  4. 4.
After landing, switch data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming on it.

Questions about the internet in Brazil

Can I buy a Brazilian SIM without a CPF?

Yes, but without a CPF, the Brazilian tax number, Claro activates a SIM only in its own shop, with a passport. A siEmanko! eSIM needs neither a CPF nor a registration.

Does the eSIM work in the Amazon and the Pantanal?

In Manaus and in the towns, yes. Deep in the jungle, on the river and on the ranches of the Pantanal there is often no network, and the internet may come only over the lodge's Wi-Fi. Download maps for offline use.

Will the package work on the Argentine side of the Iguaçu Falls?

No, it works only on Brazilian networks. For both sides of the falls choose the regional "South America" package.
